Opening Conference
Title: AI and the New Mathematical Work
Presenters: Philippe R. Richard, Université de Montréal & Steven Van Vaerenbergh, Universidad de Cantabria
Time and location: Monday, 21 October 2024, 15:30 - 17:00, Salón de Actos.
ETM Research Plenary
Title: Advances and trends in research on Mathematical Working Spaces
Presenters: Carolina Henriquez-Rivas, Alain Kuzniak & Darlis Panqueban
Time and location: Tuesday, 22 October 2024, 11:00 - 12:00, Salón de Actos.
Workshop with GeoGebra Discovery and MathCityMap
Title: Mathematical Walks with GeoGebra Discovery and MathCityMap
Presenters: Belén Ariño-Morera; Angélica Martínez-Zarzuelo; Tomás Recio
Time and location: Wednesday, 23 October 2024, 15:00 - 16:00, Salón de Actos.
Workshop 1
Title: Mathematical Work in Linear Algebra with Digital Technology. ECOS-ANID C22H03 Project
Presenters: Jorge Gaona; Romina Menares; Elizabeth Montoya; Fabrice Vandebrouck; Laurent Vivier
Time and location: Thursday, 24 October 2024, 11:30 - 13:15, and Friday 25 October 2024, 9:00 - 10:30, Room B2.
This workshop will be based on the ECOS-ANID project on linear algebra. The mathematical work of pre-service teachers will be discussed, as well as the paradigms that have been proposed for linear algebra and that guide the design of tasks and the analysis of mathematical work.
In the first session, we will present on the key elements of the MWS theory, including the notion of paradigms, by specifying them for work in linear algebra. Then, a particularly rich task, accessible via an online platform, will be proposed to the participants with an instrumental dimension taking into account the Matrixcalc, Wolfram Alpha and ChatGPT software (bring your computers!). In the second session, we will focus on the work of the student teachers who took part in the study. We will analyse extracts from their work and then draw up a summary.
Workshop 2
Title: GeoGebra Discovery vs ChatGPT
Presenter: Pilar Vélez
Time and location: Thursday, 24 October 2024, 11:30 - 13:15, and Friday 25 October 2024, 9:00 - 10:30, Salón de Actos.
This workshop first introduces GeoGebra Discovery, focusing on some features of the automatic reasoning tools for elementary geometry theorems. We will then go on to compare, through some relevant examples, the performance of ChatGPT and GeoGebra Discovery on the same problems. We will conclude with a discussion of the pros and cons of both systems, and propose a cooperation that leverages the best of both approaches as a relevant and urgent research goal.
Attendees are invited to bring their computers to work on the examples with the web or desktop version of GeoGebra Discovery (accessible at https://kovzol.github.io/geogebra-discovery/) as well as with ChatGPT.
Public Session
Title: A Sample from the Mathematics Festival
Presenters: Alejandro Cabrera, Francisco Guantecura, Fabiola Arévalo, Flor Carrillo, Norma Segura, Elizabeth Montoya Delgadillo
Time and location: Thursday, 24 October 2024, 19:00 - 20:00, Venue A.
We propose a mathematical outreach activity through games using an educational kit that includes seven experiences regularly implemented in schools and universities. These are replicas of versions previously presented at the Mathematics Festival in Chile. The main goal is to bring mathematics closer to all audiences, from the youngest to the oldest, by playfully showcasing known properties and results.
After several successful editions with these games, we have earned a prominent place in the field of mathematical outreach in Chile. This proposal has been recognized as a successful example of scientific dissemination, growing stronger every year and attracting a growing audience eager to explore mathematics from new perspectives.
We invite you to enjoy mathematics in Castro Urdiales!
